Shipping HDPE Pipes from China: Logistics, Costs & Customs Guide
A practical guide to shipping HDPE pipes from China — container selection, pipe loading, export documentation, transit times, and import duty considerations.
HDPE pipes are bulky, relatively lightweight, and sensitive to improper stacking. Getting the logistics wrong — wrong container type, missing documentation, incorrect HS code — creates problems at the destination port that are slow and expensive to fix.
Container selection
Standard pipe lengths from Chinese factories are 6m or 12m. The 12m length is actually produced at 11.8m–11.9m to fit inside a 40’ container (internal length ~12.03m). If a factory tells you their pipes are exactly 12.0m, confirm they’ll fit before loading — it’s a common issue.
| Container | Internal length | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| 20’ standard | 5.90m | 6m pipes only |
| 40’ standard | 12.03m | 11.8–11.9m pipes |
| 40’ high-cube | 12.03m | Same length, more height for stacking |
| Open-top 40’ | 12.03m | Pipes over 12m, or overheight loads |
For large DN pipes, the constraint is volume not weight. How much pipe fits per container varies a lot by diameter:
- DN110 SDR17: ~1,200–1,400m per 40’HC
- DN250 SDR17: ~300–400m per 40’HC
- DN400 SDR17: ~100–140m per 40’HC
- DN630 SDR17: ~30–45m per 40’HC
Small DN pipe on drums loads more efficiently per container, but drum weight limits apply.
Documentation checklist
Missing or incorrect documents are the most common cause of customs delays. Every shipment needs:
- Commercial invoice: goods description, unit price, total value, Incoterms
- Packing list: quantities, weights, dimensions per package
- Bill of Lading: issued by the shipping line
- Certificate of Origin: type depends on destination — Form E for ASEAN-China FTA (0% duty for ASEAN buyers), Form A for GSP preferences, EUR.1 or REX for EU
- Material test certificates: ISO 4427 conformity declaration and resin batch records
- Inspection report: if third-party inspection was conducted
Get these documents before the vessel departs. Corrections after sailing are expensive and slow.
Import duty
| Destination | HS Code | General duty | FTA rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vietnam | 3917.32 | 3–5% | 0% (Form E) |
| Thailand | 3917.32 | 5% | 0% (Form E) |
| UAE | 3917.32 | 5% | — |
| Saudi Arabia | 3917.32 | 6.5% | — |
| UK | 3917.32 | 6.5% | — |
| EU | 3917.32 | 6.5% | — |
| Australia | 3917.32 | 0–5% | — |
The correct HS code for HDPE pipes is generally 3917.32 (tubes, pipes and hoses, of plastics, seamless, not reinforced). Misclassification attracts the wrong duty rate or triggers a customs hold. Verify with your customs broker — rates change and classification can vary by country.
Transit times and freight costs
| Route | Typical transit |
|---|---|
| Tianjin/Qingdao → Haiphong | 5–8 days |
| Shanghai → Bangkok | 8–12 days |
| Qingdao → Dubai | 18–22 days |
| Tianjin → Dammam | 20–25 days |
| Shanghai → Felixstowe | 28–35 days |
| Qingdao → Fremantle | 18–22 days |
Approximate freight (40’HC, current market):
- China → Southeast Asia: $800–1,800
- China → Middle East: $1,200–2,500
- China → Europe: $2,000–4,000
- China → Australia: $1,500–2,800
Freight markets move. Get current quotes from a forwarder for actual numbers — the ranges above are a rough orientation, not a quote.
Common loading problems
Pipe deformation in transit: Pipes need timber bearers with adequate support spacing. For large DN pipes, wooden frames inside the container prevent crushing during transit. Specify loading requirements in your purchase order — don’t leave it to the factory’s judgment.
HS code misclassification: Factory export departments make mistakes on this. Review the commercial invoice before the vessel departs.
Missing mill certificates at customs: Some destination countries require material test certificates as part of import clearance. Get them from the factory before shipment, not after.
