How to Source PVC Pipes from China: Standards, Grades, and Quality Checks

A practical guide to sourcing PVC-U pressure pipe and drainage pipe from China — ISO 1452, GB/T 10002, K-value explained, and what to verify before you order.

PVC pipe sourcing from China is generally more straightforward than HDPE, but has its own failure modes. The main ones — K-value substitution and excess filler — are invisible without testing. This guide covers what to specify and what to check.

Pressure pipe vs drainage pipe

These are different products made to different standards. PVC-U pressure pipe is for cold water supply, irrigation mains, and low-pressure industrial applications — rated PN6 to PN16. PVC-U drainage pipe is gravity-flow, non-pressure rated, sized by nominal internal diameter in many markets.

Make sure you’re quoting the right type. Some Chinese factories produce both; others specialise. Getting the wrong one delivered is a documentation and returns problem.

Standards

StandardApplicationMarket
ISO 1452PVC-U pressure pipe for water supplyInternational
GB/T 10002PVC-U pressure pipeChina domestic / some export
EN 1452PVC-U pressure pipeEU
AS/NZS 1477PVC pressure and drainageAustralia / NZ

For export orders, ISO 1452 is the right standard to specify. GB/T 10002 is closely aligned but some importers require ISO specifically for documentation purposes. Confirm with your importer or project specification before ordering.

K-value: the quality metric that matters

K-value is the Fikentscher K-value — a measure of the molecular weight of the PVC polymer. Higher K-value means longer polymer chains, which means better mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and long-term durability.

ISO 1452 pressure pipe requires K-value of 67 or above, measured per ISO 1628-2 (solution viscosity in cyclohexanone).

Why this matters: PVC compound is priced partly on K-value. A factory using lower K-value compound can produce dimensionally correct pipe that passes visual inspection but fails earlier under pressure cycling. It looks right, measures right, and fails in service.

Request a COA showing K-value for every order. If the factory can’t provide it, or the K-value is below 67 for pressure pipe, don’t proceed.

Calcium carbonate filler

The other common substitution. Calcium carbonate (chalk) is added to reduce compound cost. It increases brittleness and reduces impact strength. You can see it when you cut a pipe cross-section — white pitting or speckling in the material. On a high-quality PVC pipe, the cut surface should be uniform and smooth.

There’s no simple field test for filler content, but it shows up in impact strength testing (ISO 179) and becomes obvious on cross-section. If you’re buying large volumes, commissioning a lab test on a sample batch is worthwhile.

Production regions

Guangdong has the strongest cluster for building drainage and small-bore pressure pipe (DN20–DN250), with a lot of export experience to Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Jiangsu is better for larger-diameter pressure pipe and stronger on ISO 1452 documentation. Shandong is competitive on drainage pipe but quality is more variable — factory selection matters more there.

What to verify before ordering

Certification scope: Check that the ISO 1452 or GB/T 10002 certificate covers your exact DN range and pressure class. A factory certified for DN20–DN160 cannot certify DN315 under the same certificate.

K-value on the COA: K-value 67 or above for pressure pipe. Request it for every batch.

Wall thickness: For ISO 1452 PN10 DN110 pipe, minimum wall is 4.2mm (SDR 26). Measure with calipers at four points around the circumference on sample pipes.

Solvent cement compatibility: For socket joints, the cement must be compatible with the pipe compound. Chinese factories typically supply compatible cement, but verify if you’re sourcing cement separately.
