Saudi Arabia Drip Irrigation: DN160 PE100 Mainline for 600-Hectare Farm

Client
Saudi agricultural development company
Duration
45 days
Order value
$85,000–$110,000 order
Key result
Sourced 25,000 m of DN160 PN8 HDPE mainline and 80,000 m of DN50 distribution pipe, delivered CIF Dammam

Background

A Saudi agricultural company was developing a 600-hectare pivot irrigation project and needed mainline and distribution pipe within six weeks. Their European supplier quoted 14 weeks at a price that didn’t make sense for an irrigation project.

The order had two parts: DN160 PN8 straight-length mainline, and DN50 coiled distribution pipe. The coiled format matters for large-area mechanised installation — you can’t lay 80,000 metres of straight-cut pipe across 600 hectares efficiently.

The UV issue

Most irrigation pipe fails in the field because of UV degradation, not pressure failure. Black HDPE gets its UV resistance from carbon black content — the spec says 2–2.5% by weight, mixed uniformly through the pipe wall. Some factories meet this on paper by using a surface colouring rather than a proper black masterbatch throughout the wall. It looks black, passes visual inspection, and starts chalking and cracking within two or three seasons of outdoor exposure.

The fix is straightforward: specify minimum carbon black content in the PO and verify it at inspection using ISO 6964.

Finding the right factory

The coiled DN50 requirement narrowed the field. Not every factory has winding equipment for that diameter — many subcontract coiled orders, which complicates quality control.

We found a Jiangsu factory that produced both the DN160 straight pipe and had its own winding equipment for DN50 coiled lines. Single source, single shipment, one audit.

The factory had GCC export history, which mattered for documentation. CIF Dammam with Arabic packing list was routine for them.

Carbon black content came back at 2.3% on the DN160 samples. Within spec and with margin.

How it went

Delivered in 45 days against a 42-day target — the three-day overrun came from a production scheduling delay on the DN50 coiled line, flagged a week before it happened. Price came in 38% below the European quote the client had received — after our 5% commission.

The client has sent inquiries for two additional farm projects in the same region.
